A court in Kampala, Uganda, has fined three mobile financial service agents 120,000 Ugandan shillings (approximately 30 euros) each for illegally obtaining and disclosing a customer’s personal data in July 2025. If they fail to pay the fine, they face three months in prison. The agents also admitted to not registering with the relevant authorities, violating Uganda’s 2019 Data Protection and Privacy Act. The ruling, delivered on May 5, 2026, highlights ongoing challenges in data protection amid rapid digitization, weak law enforcement, and low public awareness.
