Uganda: Health Facilities Ordered to Comply with Data Protection Law

Illustration — Uganda: Health Facilities Ordered to Comply with Data Protection Law

The Ugandan Ministry of Health now requires all hospitals and district health offices to appoint a Data Protection Officer (DPO) and register with the Personal Data Protection Office (PDPO) within 60 days. This measure, driven by gaps in patient data management and the rise of electronic medical records, is based on the 2019 law. Facilities must also adopt data security and retention policies. Technical support will be provided to ease the transition. Non-compliance may result in penalties.
