Mauritius’s National Data Strategy (NDS) 2025-2029, coordinated by the Data Protection Office (DPO), aims to transform data into a strategic asset to drive economic growth and innovation. The DPO plays a pivotal role in ensuring the protection of personal data, aligning local regulations with international standards such as the GDPR, and promoting transparent and secure governance.
The strategy is built on 10 fundamental pillars, including data literacy, digital sovereignty, security, open public data, and legal reform to modernize regulatory frameworks. It also encourages data sharing between the public and private sectors while strengthening cybersecurity and the adoption of emerging technologies like AI.
The ultimate goal is to position Mauritius as a trusted regional hub in the data economy, balancing innovation, citizen protection, and global competitiveness. The DPO works closely with the Ministry of Information Technology Communication and Innovation (MITCI) to implement these initiatives and foster an inclusive and resilient digital ecosystem.
